Stripe + Shopify - how to avoid double-counted revenue

Does your Shopify store charge through Stripe? See why the same orders can be counted twice, how to check it in SeeProfit and which source to keep.

If your Shopify store charges payments through Stripe and you connect both sources to SeeProfit, every order lands in the panel twice: once as a Shopify order and once as a Stripe payment. Your revenue (and profit) will be roughly doubled.

Why it happens

  • Shopify reports orders - every sale in the store.
  • Stripe reports payments - every card charge.

When an order is paid through Stripe, both integrations see the same event from two sides. SeeProfit cannot safely assume it is a duplicate (amounts do coincide by accident), so instead of silently deleting data we warn you and ask for a decision.

How SeeProfit detects it

We compare Stripe and Shopify payments from the last 30 days. If we find at least a few pairs with the same amount and currency and a close date (up to 48 hours apart), and the pairs cover a significant share of the entries, we show a warning on the dashboard and in Integrations.

How to check it yourself

  1. Open Entries and set the Source filter to stripe; note a few recent amounts and dates.
  2. Switch the filter to shopify and compare - if you see the same amounts on the same (or neighbouring) days, those are almost certainly the same orders.
  3. You can also compare the panel's revenue total with your actual takings - with duplicates it will be ~2x too high.

What to do - which source to keep?

Your situationKeepWhy
All store payments go through StripeStripe, disconnect ShopifyStripe has both revenue and fees - you lose nothing
The store uses several gateways (e.g. Stripe + PayPal)Shopify, disconnect StripeShopify sees all sales regardless of gateway; add Stripe fees manually as a recurring or one-off cost
Stripe also handles sales OUTSIDE the store (e.g. SaaS subscriptions)It dependsUsually: keep Stripe for that activity in a separate SeeProfit business, and track the store via Shopify

Disconnect a source in IntegrationsDisconnect next to the connection. Already-synced entries stay in the panel - new ones stop arriving immediately.

The warning is wrong (false positive)

Equal amounts do coincide - e.g. when you mostly sell one product at a fixed price or have subscriptions with identical installments. If you checked and everything is fine:

  • "Hide (remind on new ones)" - the banner disappears and only returns if new matching pairs show up,
  • "Don't show again" - the banner never returns for this business.

Both buttons are right on the warning banner.
